A cold winter night…

Hammock

It’s a cold, snowy night here in Illinois so it seemed the perfect time to pull out a photo from November of St. Pete’s Beach.  I wish I was back there right now enjoying a nap again in the warm sunshine with a light breeze and the sound of waves hitting the beach.  Oh…and the sand between my toes.  I LOVE the beach…..SO much better than shoveling snow and scraping ice off my car windows after work.

One of my goals this year is to travel someplace (preferably “new”) every month.  So for January that trip was to Birmingham, AL for my daughter’s grad school interview.  I had never been to Birmingham…or Alabama for that matter…before and I must say it made quite the impression.  We had just crossed the border when traffic on I-65 came to a halt.  Long story short…we sat on a 10 mile stretch of highway for over 8 hours.  Yep…EIGHT hours!   The culprit?  Snow and ice.  I never did hear exactly how much they got but it seriously had to be less than an inch of snow.  The highway was a sheet of ice and we either sat still or barely inched along from about 2:30 till 10:30 or 11pm.  It was crazy.  Thankfully we had cell phones (and each other, of course) to keep us busy.  I had joked when we left town that we were going to have “quantity” time together…oh, I had no idea!  We left that morning from Carbondale and what should have taken us 6 hours to get to Birmingham took 16 hours.  It was the first time in my life that I wished I was traveling in an RV!  Once the drama of the arrival into Birmingham ended, we enjoyed ourselves.  It’s a beautiful city and as we were leaving we wished we would have had more time to explore it.  Next time, I just hope it’s warmer!
